I was wondering what are some good movies that about about a girl and boy (or man and woman) of different cultures/ races falling in love. I really like dirty dancing: havana nights and the sleeping dictionary. So something along those lines.

is this an example of logos, pathos, or ethos.?
Read the following excerpt and determine if it is an example of logos, pathos, or ethos.

"We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating ‘for whites only.’"

the reason they always use MLK’s "I have a dream" speech is because it effectively teaches all 3
This excerpt of the speech is Pathos,
keywords: unspeakable horros/heavy with the fatigue of travel/smaller ghetto to a larger one/children (for the most part if someones mentions children, its Pathos)/selfhood and robbed of their dignity.

Pathos. The main point in that particular passage is to stir up emotions, so it is pathos.

Palindromes (2004)

IMDB rating: 6.90

Plot: A fable of innocence: thirteen-year-old Aviva Victor wants to be a ‘mom’. She does all she can to make this happen, and comes very close to succeeding, but in the end her plan is thwarted by her sensible parents. So she runs away, still determined to get pregnant one way or another, but instead finds herself lost in another world, a less sensible one, perhaps, but one pregnant itself with all sorts of strange possibility. She takes a road trip from the suburbs of New Jersey, through Ohio to the plains of Kansas and back. Like so many trips, this one is round-trip, and it’s hard to say in the end if she can ever be quite the same again, or if she can ever be anything but the same again.

Good Son, The
Good Son, The (1993)

IMDB rating: 5.80

Plot: While 12-year-old Mark Evans is at his mother’s side as she’s dying of cancer at a hospital in Arizona, she makes him promise her that she won’t die. When she does die, Mark is consumed with grief, and is also guilt-ridden because he couldn’t keep his promise to her. Shortly after, Mark’s father Jack is assigned to take a two week business trip to Tokyo, Japan. Thinking that the blustery Maine environment will do Mark some good, Jack leaves Mark with Jack’s brother Wallace Evans in Maine while Jack is on his trip. Wallace and his wife Susan have a son Mark’s age named Henry and an 8-year-old daughter named Connie. Wallace and Susan’s 3-year-old son Richard died by drowning in the bathtub a few months ago. At first, Mark and Henry get along great, but Mark begins to notice that Henry’s ideas of fun differ significantly from his own. Henry threatens to topple Mark from a 15 meter high tree house, and Henry shows Mark his dummy, named “Mr. Highway”, which Henry drops from an overpass onto a highway, causing a 10-car pileup. Later, Henry uses his homemade crossbow to kill the neighbor’s dog. Henry also insinuates that Richard’s drowning was not an accident. But Henry’s perfect son facade is so convincing that no one believes Mark. Everyone is convinced that Mark is just acting out the trauma of his mother’s death. Mark knows that Henry drowned Richard in a fit of jealousy because it seemed to Henry that Susan and Wallace were giving Richard the most attention. Also, Mark believes that his mother has been reincarnated in Susan, and he makes the mistake of telling Henry about it. Fueled by more jealousy than ever before, Henry’s reign of terror escalates, and he hints to Mark that he plans to kill Connie for the same reason why he killed Richard. But even after Connie survives a suspicious ice skating accident, Mark’s fears are still dismissed. And then Susan discovers Henry’s secret playhouse, and she finds the rubber duckie that was missing from Richard’s bath on the day of the drowning. Now that Susan knows the truth, will she save her nephew or her own son?

Why do many Christians hate hearing this quote from Jesus?
Matthew 25:31-46

31 ?When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy[a] angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ?Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in

41 ?Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ?Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;

etc. Full passage here:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea rch=Matthew+25%3A31-46&version=NKJV

Anyway, the question is, why do so many Christians fight this? Jesus specifically says: Those that do good deeds enter the kingdom, those that do not enter hell. Period, the end. Yet so many Christians want so hard to believe, for whatever reason, that you MUST believe to enter heaven, they are willing to completely ignore this verse, and pretend it does not exist, since it contradicts their beliefs.

Why? Shouldn’t we embrace this passage? Wouldn’t a loving God accept all god people into heaven, regardless of what faith they were? Especially since so many in the world are raised in environments hostile to Christianity, and therefore do not really have much of a chance of EVER converting to Christianity.

No.

First of all-you can’t WORK your way into heaven, as seen here:

Ephesians 2:8-9 (New International Version)

8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith?and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God? 9not by works, so that no one can boast.

Secondly, we see that there WILL be those who reject Christ, & this is their fate:

Revelation 20:11-15 (New International Version)

The Dead Are Judged
11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

If you "believe in the Bible, as much as you "claim to"-how do you dispute these 2 sets of verses I have shown you?

You are talking Universalism, which is NOT Biblical.

And if you WERE redeemed by the Blood of Christ you would KNOW that God is righteous, & whatever he has decided for those who have NOT heard His gospel is also righteous.

I really doubt that you have any concept about what BIBLICAL Christianity is, if you post a question like this.

If you DID believe in what the Bible teaches, heed THESE words of Christ:

Matthew 12:37 (New International Version)

37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

UNFORTUNATELY, Christianity has brainwashed so many people into believing that so called "good works" have no meaning without that loyalty pledge. They also feel that emulating Jesus without actually believing in him is pointless. The terms for this way of thinking are unprincipled and dogmatic.
Gaytheist Buddha | Feb 09, 2010

FAIL. That is at Christ’s second coming. Christians will not be judged like that. It is the nations who remain. The age of grace seems to end at the time of the rapture. Then people will be judged on their works in the time of the tribulation.

Christians don’t worship Jesus, they worship the Religion’s interpretation of Jesus.

It’s like broken-telephone, except the original is written down.
Clever Nickname | Feb 09, 2010

Not that I’m a Christian, but the words here could be read figuratively to mean belief. After all, those who gave Jesus food and drink and took him in could be said to be those who strengthened him with belief. (And what is a god without people believing in it?)

I imagine you’ll see several answers like this.
Gen. Stiggo (Atheati-in-Chief) | Feb 09, 2010

The Bible isn’t consistent on the subject of how to go to Heaven. Period.

That’s why both you and Peachfuzz can be right.
dead fundie | Feb 09, 2010

Faith produces action.

There will be some, according to scripture, who claim to be Christians and yet don’t follow Christ’s teaching. Those people will not be saved by simply applying a label of "Christian" to themselves. This is what the verse to which you refer describes.

To make this verse say that all people will get to Heaven would require you to omit or ignore numerous passages of scripture where Jesus specifically refers to hell. Now, I don’t know how you can do that — of even why you’d want to do that — while at the same time you decry that Christians have a tendency to ignore this one passage.

If we’ll all end up in Heaven, then Jesus is a liar. If we’ll all end up in Heaven, Jesus’ sacrifice was meaningless. Those things make Jesus out to be a fool.

If we believe what Jesus said, and we believe in what Jesus did, then there is certainly a hell, and unrepentant sinners will be punished there.
Dr. Bob | Feb 09, 2010

The ones that do good dead’s His eye are those who believe. Only those who believe have the power to do good. Good is done when God works through a believer.
forgiven490 | Feb 09, 2010

Well done, Kevin. We should all be reminded from time to time of Christ’s commandment to truly help others rather than just to pay lip service.
Your Granny | Feb 09, 2010

I’m not against an atheist trying to do something helpful to hedge his bets.

I agree, it’s not a multiple choice test or a T/F test or an essay question, it’s just grace.

The problem is you’ve read necessity and sufficiency into your passage. Necessity is there, sufficiency isn’t.
Xians try to do charity (and fail at it, admittedly) in response to the great grace extended to us, not to get a ticket to heafen
Rockadayjohnny | Feb 09, 2010

We do embrace this passage. We also don’t ignore the many verses that say we are saved by faith alone.

Matthew 25 is looking at the results of being saved. Not how to be saved. Faith saves us. A living active faith causes us to do works. The works do not save us though - they are a bi-product of faith. If we could earn our way into heaven, Christ died for nothing.

Galatians 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith?and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God? (9) not by works, so that no one can boast. (10) For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

James 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Say you own a business and you give all employees a set of rules to follow, if you follow the rules you get a partner ship in the company.
1. take care of others
2. help others
3. feed others
4. work for the betterment of the company
5. sell the company through your behavior.
The President of the company saw you walk by a man in the company and not help him feed his family. You have broken two of the rules, what will the President do? Let you have a partner ship or fire you? We have set of rules to live by and if you fail then you pay the price.

Try these!

Titanic (1997)- great plot, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are outstanding, tearjerker, thrilling, Oscar-winning

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)- great plot, great soundtrack, an eye-opener, inspiring, artistic, Oscar-winning

Milk (2008)- great adaptation of a true story, inspiring, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin are absolutely amazing (so is James Franco), Oscar-winning

The Dark Knight (2008)- don’t worry, I’m not a huge fan of Batman, but this film is absolutely great. I haven’t even seen the first two Batman movies, but it didn’t even matter. The plot is perfect, the action is suspensful and thrilling, Heath Ledger was absolutely phenomenal in his role as The Joker. Every time there was a scene change, I would hope he’d be on screen because his role is just so creepy and flatout crazy. The movie takes turns you don’t see coming and the whole thing is a masterpiece.

Harold and Maude (1971)- honestly it’s a little weird, great quotes, a dark comedy with a sad but fulfilling ending that makes you feel happy and sad at the same time, great soundtrack (Cat Stevens), hilarious in an odd way, great story. But again, very weird and kind of odd. This is not a stupid comedy by any means, but rather a great story about life and death, full of funny moments. It is a really odd movie to try to describe but easily one of my all-time favortites. Please see it, although like I said you will see that it is odd within the first five minutes but just keep watching. Made me cry a bit at the end. This is a great story, it really is. It makes you think deeply as you roll on the floor laughing, and leaves you with a really great message and feel. In the end, it is a feel-good, quirky, hilarious and heartfelt movie. The perfect combo. Strongly recommend this one.

No Country for Old Men (2007)- suspensful, visually captivating, a bit bloody, thrilling, a bit confusing so you have to really pay attention throughout the film and you may need to see it again to understand it better, gives you chills, great acting by Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and especially Javier Bardem, perfectly put together, great quotes, Oscar-winning

If you are looking for a comedy, I’d say "17 Again" (2009)- hilarious! Kinda sad and heart warming at parts and so worth it.

If you are looking for a great romace, I’d say "The Notebook." It breaks your heart and has a great plot. Major tearjerker.

If you are planning to go to the movies, I’d say see "Nine" or "Avatar" in 3-D. "Nine" has Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie, Marion Cotillard, Judy Dench, and Sophia Loren. "Avatar" sends a great message to the world about saving the environment, in a way that is visually stunning and very creative. There are also parts of this movie that portray some prominent aspects of whats going on with America and other countries right now. There are a few lines that will make you refer back to a political or environmental point of view. And I don’t even like sci-fi, but this movie was great and definitely worth seeing in 3-D. This movie won Best Picture and Best Director at the Golden Globes 2010.

Hope this helps!

This might be a joke, but this is actually the underlying sentiment behind missionary work. If they didn’t think that the people were inadequate or misguided, why would they feel the need to impose their religion on them?
Nerdlinger ~ | Feb 01, 2010

‘White man’, as you choose to call him, took the gospel to Africa but the countries of ‘white man’ have become so corrupt, evil and Godless that we now have much to learn from missionaries who now go out of Africa and preach the good news of salvation through Christ to the descendants of those who took the good news to them long ago.
